CNTA REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES
June 15, 2010CNTA 2nd Floor Training Center, 1189 Mountain Avenue
Minutes taken and prepared by Beverley Rouse, CNTA Executive Secretary

[Minutes are not official until approved at the next Rep Council.]

I. CALL TO ORDERVice president Toni Sandell called the meeting to order at 4:03 P.M.

II. MOTION TO FIX THE TIME TO ADJOURN—Susie Cook moved that we adjourn by 5:00 at the latest. Mike Strickmater seconded. The motion passed.

III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Karen Jones moved to approve the minutes from May 18, 2010. Harold "Buzz" Stryker seconded. The motion passed.

IV. REPORTS

A. State Council—The $1.80 dues increase passed State Council overwhelmingly. Endorsement of the late-start kindergarten bill didn’t pass the State Council because it would require taking money from Prop. 98. A bill in the legislature that we should work to defeat would change the Ed Code so that RIFed teachers would not get full per diem for subbing after twenty days, as is currently the requirement. We should also notify our legislators that we want them to pass the bill that would restore jobs for teachers if the federal government gives the state money.

B. Elementary 4-6 Director—Watch for an e-mail that will be asking teachers for ideas to bring to the curriculum committee meetings, which are composed of district and CNTA representatives.

C. Treasurer’s Report—The income statement was at the back of the packets. The cost of the La Habra support rally was about $800 paid from the PAC (Political Action Committee) and about $200 more for movie ticket awards for the volunteers who went.

D. Vice President—The retiring vice president symbolically passed the CNTA cell phone to Anne Freeman, the newly appointed vice president. Anne thanked retiring Executive Board members Mike Testo, Toni Sandell, and Teri Basso for their hard work over the years. Kristi Johnson and Angela Genet, who are no longer on the board, also deserve thanks for all their work.

V. OLD BUSINESS

    1. None.

VI. NEW BUSINESS

A. Appointment of Vice President—As required by the Bylaws, when a board member, such as vice president, retires or resigns, the Executive Board appoints a member to serve until the next regular election, which would be next spring. The board, at its last meeting, appointed Anne Freeman to serve as vice president, taking Toni Sandell’s position, until the next regular election.

B. CNTA Elections Report

1. John Davis, Anne Freeman, Jerry Goar, and Bill Fisher won State Council seats for three-year terms. Harold "Buzz" Stryker was elected for the one-year term to State Council.

2. Kelly Remington-Little won the election to be the new Elementary K-3 director.

3. Kelly Fisher and Rick Remington are in a run-off for the remaining State Council seat.

VII. ADJOURNMENT—John Davis moved to adjourn the meeting. Matt Alford seconded. The motion passed. The meeting adjourned at 4:20 P.M.

VIII. BREAKOUTS—Reps could choose to meet for breakouts with the Elementary K-3, Elementary 4-6, Intermediate, High School, and Support Services directors.
